Dean Gale Issues Campus-wide Chili Challenge

"Bring it back, baby!" After being declared Chili-Dean 2004, Peg Gale, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES), has issued a challenge to the other units of the University to show their stuff on Friday, August 5, 2005 at the University’s second Campus Chili Challenge.Last year Dean Gale’s chili beat all the other deans on campus.

This year she has drawn a line in the sand and has opened up the competition campus-wide. The popularity of the School’s past chili-challenges during alumni weekend was the basis for expanding the challenge campus-wide.The Campus Chili Challenge will be held in conjunction with Michigan Tech’s Alumni Reunion events. All academic or administrative units are invited to accept the challenge by emailing Carrie Richards (carrie@mtu.edu) with the name of their team and type of chili by July 1, 2005.

Each chili-team will prepare three gallons of chili for the event. Samples of each chili will be served in the atrium of the SFRES on Friday Aug. 5 beginning at 11:30a.m. The chili should be made in advance and warmers will be provided. MUB resources are available to all teams. Contact David Maplethorpe for more details. (dlmaplet@mtu.edu or 487-2543)

Everyone is invited to attend and join visiting alumni in sampling the chili from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There will be an award for “The People’s Choice.” Voting will be ongoing with everyone “voting” for their favorite chili. One dollar equals one vote and the team whose chili gets the most votes will be declared People’s Chili Choice 2005. The proceeds will go into scholarship funds for the departments who participate.here will also be an award given to the “best” chili as selected by a highly-qualified judging panel made up of the University’s alumni board of directors. Their decision will determine who is named Chili Champ 2005.

“It’s nice to have a fun event where alumni, friends, faculty and staff can participate in an informal way. It has really been a hit for our school and a big draw. The quality of the various chilis has been extraordinary and now with other units’ participation, we will have a real exciting competition,” said Dean Gale.
