Location, Travel & Accommodations

The conference will be held at Michigan Technological University's School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science in Houghton, Michigan. The School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science is a leading environmental research organization nationally and internationally, and it has close ties with numerous forest products industries in the area, providing a full range of challenges and opportunities in utilizing a sustainable natural resource.

Houghton is located in the scenic Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Just minutes from Lake Superior, Houghton is surrounded by extensive tracts of forestlands and offers visitors unparalleled opportunity for outdoor recreation. <view community links>


Accommodations
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Best Western Franklin Square Inn, 820 Shelden Ave., Houghton, MI. Reservations can be made by calling 1-888-WESTERN or 1-906-487-1700. Please indicate that you are attending the Carbon in Northern Forests conference.
Rates for reservations made prior to June 1, 2008 are $70 plus tax for a single room and $78 plus tax for a double room; rates after June 1 are subject to availability.


The hotel provides many services and will provide a free shuttle to the airport when arranged in advance. Located downtown, the hotel is close to many stores and restaurants and is approximately one mile (15 minute walk) from the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science.

Travel

By car, Houghton is approximately ten hours from Detroit, six hours from Madison, and eight hours from Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Houghton is served by the Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX), which provides direct flights to and from Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Attendees are advised to book their flight reservations as soon as possible due to a limited number of incoming and outgoing flights. The airport is approximately a ten-minute drive from downtown Houghton. Car rentals are available through Priceless and National car rental and should be booked in advance. Some hotels offer shuttle service to and from the airport, and the local taxi companies also serve the airport.

Sawyer International Airport (MQT) near Marquette is a two-hour drive from Houghton and is served by flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit.
