Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis, L.) is a small herbeceous perennial typically found in moist, nutrient-rich deciduous forests. It occurs in the family Papaveraceae and has red-orange sap (hence the common name 'bloodroot'). Many species in this family have yellow to red-orange or milky sap. Species are usually distinguished from one another based on morphological traits, for example, leaf shape, flower arrangement or color, the presence/absence of spines, bark texture, etc.
