Many factors control or mediate the development of forest ecosystems, including climate, physiography, disturbances, soils, vegetation, and animals. In this example from the Little Carp River in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the composition, structure, and function of the ecosystem is controlled by many factors. One of the more important factors mediating this riparian ecosystem is annual flooding.
