This picture was taken in northern Idaho from a small, fixed-winged airplane. The relatively moist, north-facing slope is dominated by Douglas-fir. The south-facing slope is much drier, and the natural vegetation is dominated by grasses. In this example, aspect compensates for elevation, and the south-facing slopes are dominated by vegetation usually found at lower elevations.
