Jack pine (Pinus banksiana, Lamb.) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta, Dougl. ex Loud.) are two examples of species with serotinuous cones, cones with scales bound by resins. Fire-generated heat above 45oC causes the resin to melt and the seeds release. The timing of seed dispersal is closely tied to wildfires that often reduce competition and prepare a mineral seedbed. Following wildfire, dense stands of natural seedling regeneration are common, such as the one of lodgepole pine shown in the above photo.
