Mesic Longleaf Pine Ecosystems

Physiography: Rolling to flat uplands; fluvial terraces.

Soils: Moderately well to well drained sandy to sandy clay loam soils.

Canopy Vegetation: Longleaf pine.

Subcanopy Vegetation: Sparse subcanopy.

Understory: Extremely diverse, dominated by wiregrass (Aristida stricta Michx.) and associates

Fire Interval: Typically once every 1-5 years; sufficient fuel to carry surface fires and adequate moisture levels.

Successional Trajectory in the Absence of Fire: Canopy succeeds toward oaks and mixed pines.
