This picture shows the expanding flowers of red maple (Acer rubrum, L.) in the spring. Notice that the vegetative buds have not yet begun to develop (flush). Many wind-pollinated deciduous trees flower before the leaves develop, presumably, to facilitate successful pollination. Otherwise, fully-developed canopies would intercept a great deal of the pollen before it could reach the female flowers.
