Goals: The goals of this course are for students to be able to:

· Define, describe, and identify the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of wetlands and how to measure these characteristics;

· Determine whether one is in a wetland and how to delineate this wetland;

· Describe the variation in different wetland types throughout the US and the world (palustrine, riverine, mangrove, estuary, prairie potholes, salt water marsh, etc.);

· Understand the ecology of wetlands by being able to: i) identify key wetland plant species, ii) identify common wetland soils, iii) assess wetland hydrology, and iv) assess the importance of wetlands as habitat for birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and microfaunal populations;

· Gain a basic understanding of State & Federal Laws regulating and protecting wetlands.
