Isle Royale Field Ecology - 4 Credits
Click here to view scenes from beautiful Isle Royale Field Ecology of Isle Royale (4 credits) Come experience the roadless wilderness and the crystal clear waters of Lake Superior in Field Ecology of Isle Royale (4 credits). Explore the ecology and history of Isle Royale through backpacking, conversations with researchers, examination of research data, and independent research. This intense 3-week course is designed to provide students an opportunity to learn the process of science through direct experience, observation, and discussion. It includes unique opportunities to visit with researchers and collect field data to contribute to the park’s natural resources monitoring projects. Students will spend a week on the island carrying out individual and group research projects and a week on either side of the class learning research skills and writing up and presenting their results. The first and third week will be at the Ford Forestry Center (FFC). Due to the intensive nature of this course, students are required to stay at FFC. The tentative dates for the course are May 6- May 26. The course will be lead by Dr. Kate Bradley a research ecologist in the School of Forest Resources and Natural Resources. The primary purpose of this course is twofold: 2) teach you how research is conducted from beginning to end -- from conception of an idea to the presentation of written and oral reports. Registration The class is limited to 9 participants. Course fees will range between $700-$800 depending on enrollment. The cost covers, course materials, transportation, the boat ride from Copper Harbor (Michigan) to Isle Royale, housing and food at FFC, camping fees, and some camping equipment.
