Images of the U.J. Noblet Building Expansion Project Completed October 2000 |
|
The groundbreaking ceremony for the forestry expansion was held April 23, 1999. The expansion more than doubled the space available to the School, from 48,000 to 98,000 square feet. It included Gene Hesterberg Hall, named for the former head of the forestry department, built in the center of the Noblet building over the existing concrete court. Hesterberg Hall includes a 135-seat auditorium, a large conference room, and a student organizations office, as well as a large atrium featuring four wood columns representing trees. The second part of the expansion was a new wing to be named Sam Horner Hall. This hall was made possible by the generous support of Robert and Virginia Horner. Sam Horner, Robert's father, built the Horner Flooring Company mill in Dollar Bay in 1938. His father, William Horner, pioneered the manufacture of hardwood flooring in 1891 at his Reed City plant. Later, with his son Sam, he built the nation's largest hardwood flooring mill in Newberry. The floors in the hallways and offices of Sam Horner Hall are Horner Flooring. October 6, 2000 was the official dedication of Sam Horner and Gene Hesterberg Halls. Over 300 people gathered for lunch and to be present for the ceremony that dedicated thetwo additions to the original Forestry building. Special guests Bob and Ginny Horner and Gene and Judy Hesterberg were honored for their gifts and dedication to the expansion project. The $10 million dollar project was funded by 7.5 million in State funds that MTU President Curt Tompkins was instrumental in securing, and $2.5 million in support from our alumni and friends. During the dedication ceremony MTU president Curt Tompkins commented, "We are pleased to have such handsome facilities. They are celebrations of wood. They are as visually striking as they are important to our educational endeavors .the facilities symbolize our aspirations to train foresters, wood scientists, environmental scientists, researchers and ecologists who will use and manage our natural bounty." |
