“Many of these trees were my friends. Creatures I had known from nut or acorn” – Treebeard
Learning dendrology is more than memorizing features and names. My goal is to promote scientific thinking and to foster my students’ natural powers of observation to provide them with the tools needed to identify unknown species, both locally and in other parts of the country that have very different forest compositions than we have here in the UP. By focusing more on the techniques of tree identification, the students take a more active role in learning, which provides a more enjoyable and effective classroom environment.
