Lecturer The School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES) at Michigan Technological University is accepting applications for the non-tenure-track position of Lecturer, a nine-month faculty position, thirty hours per week, beginning in Fall Semester, August 2008.
This is a two-year, renewable appointment. Applicants for the Lecturer position are required to have at least a Masters degree in forestry, ecology, environmental science or related natural resource field. The primary responsibilities of this position are teaching and conducting laboratory sessions in fall and spring semesters. The candidate will have a strong interest and ability to teach two combined forestry/ecology/wildlife ecology courses that enhance the experience and success of our students early on in their degree programs. Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of teaching experience.
Additional responsibilities include advising SFRES baccalaureate students in all academic aspects of their programs of study; participate in program assessment and provide support for accreditation of degree programs; work with the Career Center and other campus services, such as Counseling Services and the Writing and Learning Centers, to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills and time management. Further, to maintain a high level of accuracy of data in official academic records and related processes in accordance with state and federal privacy legislation. One year of relevant experience in student advising is required. Experience using the BANNER student information system is desirable.

Forest Functional Genomics and Tree Biotechnology (Assistant, Associate, or full Professor)
The School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the area of Forest Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology. We have a long-standing and nationally recognized program in tree biotechnology and genomics aimed at improving commercially valuable tree characteristics. This position is open at the level of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor.
Areas of specialization are flexible but may include applications of tree genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics to problems associated with wood formation, flowering, annual and secondary growth controls, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, biofuel production, carbon sequestering and partitioning, wood quality traits, and bioremediation.Terms of the appointment: nine-month, tenure-track positions beginning August, 2008. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Competitive start-up package and laboratory space will be provided.Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., molecular genetics, genomics, biotechnology, forest ecology, forest ecosystems). An outstanding record of research and teaching excellence is desirable. The successful candidates will be expected to: (i) develop a vigorous, extramurally funded research program supporting Masters and Doctoral students, and (ii) develop and teach courses within areas of the applicant’s expertise that also complement the needs of our graduate and undergraduate curriculum. A record of sustained and active extramural research funding, extensive experience in education and training of graduate students, and ability to establish multidisciplinary collaborative research projects is required.
The School has undergraduate degree-granting programs in Forestry, Wildlife Ecology and Management, and Applied Ecology and Environmental Science, with graduate programs in Forestry (MS and MF), Forest Ecology and Management (MS), Applied Ecology (MS), Forest Science (Ph.D.), and Forestry Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology (MS and Ph.D.).
The School also hosts the Biotechnology Research Center (BRC, http://biotech.mtu.edu) and Ecosystem Science Center (ESC, http://ecosystem.mtu.edu). These centers encompass a large number of faculty members within and outside our School with diverse research programs including genomics, biotechnology, molecular genetics, molecular ecology, plant physiology, animal ecology, and forest ecology and management. We seek outstanding teachers and researchers who will complement existing strengths in the ESC and BRC, participate in interdisciplinary research collaboration within and outside the School, and contribute to the education and research missions of the School.
The School is co-located with a U.S. Forest Service ecosystems lab and offers additional opportunities for collaboration and access to facilities, including a rhizotron (http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/4159/).
