The moment I think "this I understand" is the moment Mephisto owns my
soul. No learning, no discovery can be gifted while I think: "this I
understand." It is so fundamentally ironic. I seek to understand, but
thinking that I understand destroys understanding. My approach to this
paradox is to wake up every morning and hope to be shown how something -
the more basic the better - is not what I think it is. To be shown wrong,
repeatedly, is what I hope for as a scientist. This may be the only route
to learning and understanding.
”I am a population biologist. I spend most of my time studying the wolves
and moose of Isle Royale. I am also interested in the philosophy and
ethics of ecological and conservation science.”
Effective application of the Golden Rule requires mastering the skill
of empathy. Empathy entails focused attention on a particular subject.
My research is guided by my desire to be more empathetic toward (and more
full of wonderment about) the natural world.
Specific Interests:
- Demographic and genetic elements of population biology
- Ecology of wolves and moose
