Ladies and Gentlemen-

A gentle reminder we're approximately 50 hours from a deadline to get the applications in to me for this. This is yours for the taking. I can even supply the manila envelope. Chris

All-

Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) is holding a position for a Michigan Tech-er. Bottom line: ONE OF YOU WILL GET THIS INTERNSHIP. They are looking for forestry majors. They don't care what you are classified (i.e., freshman, et al encouraged to apply).
DIRECTIONS:
1. Read the entire email below.
2. If you have a question about the program, contact Cliff directly at cliedtke@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 3. If you have questions about steps 4-8 contact me. 4. Fill out the application (see site below)
5. Develop a resume
6. Get a copy of your transcripts (electronic/unofficial versions are okay) (all of them--not just Michigan Tech's) 7. Place the application, resume, and transcripts into a manila folder--do not use a stapler or any paperclips) 8. Place the manila folder on my desk no later than close of business on 14 Feb (i.e., 5pm)

Best wishes.

The above link goes to an ODF internet site that contains quite a bit of information about our Intern Program, and specific information about each of the positions. The application for the position is also available at this site.

What we're looking for:

  * The primary purpose of the program is to give students an
opportunity to look at, and consider the Oregon Dept of Forestry
as an employer as they complete their schooling. It also gives us
an opportunity to take a look at these same students as
prospective employees. In addition, it gives students a chance to
make their education more meaningful by combining it with real
    world work experience.
  * Students MUST be returning to school after the summer that they
work in our Intern Program. This could be for continuing their
work on either their undergraduate, or graduate degrees.
  * We're not necessarily looking for the student with the most
forestry work experience, or the best grades, but the students
that have the greatest potential to become significant
contributors to the Oregon Dept of Forestry, and become the future
    leaders of the Dept.

The positions:
For the most part, the best positions for forest management students are those that are in our State Forests Management Program Here, they will be involved in a wide variety of work that could involve: reforestation surveys, timber sale layout and prep, sale administration, road layout, etc. These positions are generally in either northwest Oregon (Tillamook, Astoria, Forest Grove), or along the southern coast (Coos Bay). These are the ones that I would primarily recommend for your students.

Other Odds and Ends:
The website does a pretty good job of explaining the positions, etc, and from there you can go to our home page and explore ODF further.
Salary is dependent on the year in school.
Housing is not provided. The local District will assist students in connecting them with information to assist them in finding housing. We have had several MTU graduates work for ODF through the years. One of the primary pushes for us recruiting at MTU is that one of our employees that was an MTU grad passed away several years ago (Larry Hoffman). One of his classmates, and a current ODF employee (Stu Otto) has been pushing us to recruit in honor of Larry. I believe that if we hire someone from MTU that Stu will want to spend some time with them during the summer.

In addition, if there's someone that really would like to visit with me in person, and don't mind making the drive to Watersmeet, MI, I could be available with some advance scheduling (I'll be there from Feb 10-15).

If I can answer any questions please contact me via email.
