The Gallatin NF will be filling either a Hydro SCEP position or a Fish
Biologist SCEP position depending on applicants. Please forward to any
students who may be interested. I have already forwarded to the watershed
university departments. To quality the student must be in a hydrology
program and able to complete 640 hours of work before graduation. .

The Gallatin National Forest in USFS Region 1 is recruiting candidates for
a Hydrologist trainee position. The program is called the Student Career
Experience Program (SCEP). The program is designed for degree seeking
candidates in watershed sciences, hydrology, or engineering/hydrology, to
work for a Forest Hydrologist for at least 640 hours. Candidates
successfully completing the work portion of the program would be converted
to a career or career-conditional appointment as a Hydrologist, Hydrologist
Trainee with the Forest Service - most likely on a National Forest in
Montana or Idaho.

The program requires at least 640 hours of work with a Forest and
completion of a degree (BS, MS, or PhD) to be eligible for placement.
Commonly, SCEP programs consist of 2 summers of work experience with
placement upon graduation. Student seeking a MS or PhD could incorporate
the work experience into their thesis or dissertation program on a
case-by-case basis.

The Gallatin Hydrologist SCEP position would work directly for Mark Story,
Forest Hydrologist in the Supervisors Office in Bozeman, Montana. The
Gallatin NF is directly adjacent to the north and west sides of Yellowstone
National Park and provides a wide variety of watershed hydrology training
opportunities including water quality monitoring, geomorphic assessments, a
very active watershed rehabilitation program, fish habitat improvement, a
large CERCLA (mine reclamation project), water rights, and a wide variety
of hydrologic interactions with other programs including timber, range,
lands, fuels, fire rehabilitation, and air quality. Bozeman is the
location of Montana State University and hub of a wide variety of year
round recreation opportunities.

The attachments below include the SCEP positions announcement, application
form (OF-612), and SCEP program questions and answers. Note that the
applications can me emailed, mailed hard copy, or by FAX to the USFS
Regional Office in Missoula per the address shown in the announcement.
Inquiries are encouraged and potential applicants can contact Mark Story
per the phone number or email addresses below. Applications must be
postmarked by March 3, 2008.
