Foreign Service Officer opportunity. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on environmental issues. USAID is now recruiting for entry level candidates to become Foreign Service Officers who specialize in the broadly defined environmental aspects of international development - including environment and natural resources management, energy, and urban development. Successful candidates will join USAID through the Junior Officer Program. This will be a career conditional appointment in the Foreign Service at the FS-6 grade, and then go through an individually tailored on the job training experience of about 3 years which includes the first year or so assigned to Washington followed by approximately two years assigned to an overseas USAID mission. If the career candidate is successful in this program they can expect an automatic promotion of a full grade to FS-5 after their first year, and another automatic promotion of another full grade to FS-4 after their second year. Full tenure in as a career Foreign Service Officer (FSO) requires a minimum of three years as a career candidate in the Foreign Service, at least 18 months of overseas service with USAID, foreign language proficiency at an Foreign Service Institute (FSI) tested level of S3/R3 (French, Spanish, Portuguese) or S2/R1 in all other languages qualifying for USAID tenure, a top-secret security clearance, level one medical clearance, and certification of availability for worldwide service. Time spent in the Junior Officer Program counts towards these requirements. All career candidates must achieve tenure within five years of their entry on duty date. Note also that the total compensation package for the Foreign Service is significantly greater than the base salary - just one example is when serving overseas free housing is provided (see the linked materials for a complete listing of such additional benefits and compensations).
