Foreign Service Officer opportunity.

Please pass this information to anyone who may be interested in an entry
level opening in the Foreign Service leading to an exciting and
personally satisfying long term career as a Foreign Service Officer
working for the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on
environmental issues.

USAID is now recruiting for entry level candidates to become Foreign
Service Officers who specialize in the broadly defined environmental
aspects of international development - including environment and natural
resources management, energy, and urban development.

Successful candidates will join USAID through the Junior Officer
Program. This will be a career conditional appointment in the Foreign
Service at the FS-6 grade, and then go through an individually tailored
on the job training experience of about 3 years which includes the first
year or so assigned to Washington followed by approximately two years
assigned to an overseas USAID mission. If the career candidate is
successful in this program they can expect an automatic promotion of a
full grade to FS-5 after their first year, and another automatic
promotion of another full grade to FS-4 after their second year. Full
tenure in as a career Foreign Service Officer (FSO) requires a minimum
of three years as a career candidate in the Foreign Service, at least 18
months of overseas service with USAID, foreign language proficiency at
an Foreign Service Institute (FSI) tested level of S3/R3 (French,
Spanish, Portuguese) or S2/R1 in all other languages qualifying for
USAID tenure, a top-secret security clearance, level one medical
clearance, and certification of availability for worldwide service.
Time spent in the Junior Officer Program counts towards these
requirements. All career candidates must achieve tenure within five
years of their entry on duty date. Note also that the total
compensation package for the Foreign Service is significantly greater
than the base salary - just one example is when serving overseas free
housing is provided (see the linked materials for a complete listing of
such additional benefits and compensations).

Basic qualifications include: The applicant must have a graduate degree
(Master's or Doctorate) in a functional area directly related to the
environment position, such as environmental sciences; natural resources
management (forest, land, fisheries, coastal water resources, wildlife);
energy, environment and engineering; urban/regional planning; resource
economics; energy economics; public finance; water resources management;
biology; energy related sciences; environmental law; and/or
international relations with a focus on one of the environmental
specialties listed above. Applicants must have their advanced degree and
U.S. citizenship at time of application.
