Field Forester/Botanist

Wetland Forest Habitat Type Classification Project

Location: Douglass, Bayfield counties

Duration: July 6 – September 4, 2009

Terra Silva Consultants seeks applicants for two field technicians to carry out vegetation and soil sampling as part of the research project to develop forest habitat type classification system for wetland forests of northern Wisconsin. The project is funded by Wisconsin DNR and contracted with Dr. John Kotar, Emeritus Professor, Department of Forest Ecology and Management, UW-Madison (Currently d.b.a. Terra Silva Consultants)

DUTIES: The successful candidates will carry out vegetation and soil sampling across a range of wetland forest ecosystems in Forest Langlade and Florence Counties. The sampling design and protocol, as well as basic training will be provided. Vegetation will be sampled by strata on temporary plots. Species and their coverage values, by class, will be recorded. In addition, soil characteristics will be examined and described. GPS units equipped with soil maps will be used for locating sampling plots. All field data will be entered into computers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: A BS degree is desired in forestry, ecology, botany, soil science, or a related discipline. However, a senior status will be considered if appropriate curriculum is demonstrated. Field experience is also required, including 1) use of maps and air photos 2) basic knowledge of flora of northern forests, 3) basic knowledge of soil description, 4) some background in GPS/GIS technology. The successful candidate will be expected to be a conscientious and well-organized self-starter, capable of independent work. A valid driver’s license is required, as is the ability to work and live with a field partner, and a willingness to work in all weather conditions as necessary to assure task completion.

CONDITIONS: Applicants should be in good health and capable of vigorous outdoor activity in hot, rainy, and buggy weather. Successful applicants will work as independent contractors, *not as employees* of Wisconsin DNR or Terra Silva Consultants. Compensation is $18 per hour. Work is based on 40 hours per week; flextime is available if desired. Housing will be provided at no cost to contractor. Candidates must provide their own transportation and will be reimbursed at 52 cents per mile.
