INTRODUCTION:   The Southern Research Station will soon be filling a GS-0462-4 Forestry Technician (Research) position at the Henry R. Koen Experimental Forest in Jasper, Arkansas. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES: This position is located in a Forest Service Research Station.  The incumbent independently performs technical duties in support of professional scientists conducting various research projects.  Collects, compiles, and summarizes a variety of complex research data.  Data collection duties include locating study areas and study plots in accordance with study maps and instructions of supervisor, tree species identification (including tree seedlings), use of forestry-related equipment (e.g. field computers, electronic measuring devices, topographic maps, diameter tapes, GPS, laser measuring devices, clinometer, increment borer) and data recording.  Assures that field data are collected in an accurate and timely manner.  Works safely and promotes safe working habits by following guidelines contained in the Forest Service Health and Safety Code.  Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  GS-0462-4

TOUR OF DUTY: Temporary (not to exceed 1039 hours) beginning June 2009

 

Qualifying experience for the GS-4 level includes six months general experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or that provided familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the occupation AND six months specialized experience at the GS-3 level that is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. 

 

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Experience requirements may be met by successful completion of two (2) academic years of post high school education which included at least 12 semester/18 quarter hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester/4 quarter hours in mathematics is creditable. 

 

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

LOCATION: This position will be located at the Henry R. Koen Experimental Forest north of Jasper, Arkansas.

 

This office is located near the small community of Jasper, AR - population 498 (based on 2000 census) and about 600 today (estimated).  Just 6 miles south of the Buffalo National River and 10 miles north of the Ozark National Forest Boundary on Scenic Highway 7, Jasper is located in north central Newton County and is the County seat.  Newton County is the Elk Capitol of Arkansas and located in the headwaters of the Buffalo River.  Rental housing is scarce in this area.  However, there are a wide variety of homes and land parcels to choose from.  There are four schools in the county for grades K-12. They are located at Deer, Jasper, Western Grove and Mt.
