The Huron-Manistee National Forests will soon be recruiting applicants
for temporary (seasonal) Biological Science Technician (Wildlife)
positions for 2009. This position will generally work for forty hours
per week, up to 1039 hours (approximately 6 months) in a year. Temporary
positions do not guarantee permanent employment with the U.S. Forest
Service.
*DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:*
This person is the primary lead for field surveys for rare and listed
species (eg. red-shouldered hawk, northern goshawk, woodland warblers,
various butterflies and insects), will assist with habitat evaluation
and censusing of endangered Kirtland’s warbler, and perform a variety of
wildlife habitat enhancement projects.

For recruiting candidates for temporary positions, the Forest Service
uses open continuous recruitment (OCR) bulletins. This is a nationwide
recruitment effort for the Forest Service and applicants have the

from one application*. OCR provides a list of interested and qualified
applicants ready to be referred on a certificate of eligible for current
and future job vacancies by drawing from an already established
applicant pool. Once an application has been completed for an OCR,
applicants will be notified via e-mail reminding them to* re-certify
their application every 60 days to ensure continued interest and

This position may start work as early as May or as late as June 2009.

announcement numbers. Hourly pay rates are as follows: GS-5 $14.24. Each

Wildlife positions are considered “Arduous” and require a level of
physical fitness. Failure to meet any of the required medical
qualifications will be considered disqualifying for employment.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid State
driver’s license.
The 430,000-acre Huron National Forest is located in the northeast
portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The Huron Shores Ranger Station
comprises about ½ of that acreage and the district office is located in
Oscoda, Michigan. The Huron has a large and varied resource management
program. Some of the programs the Huron is noted for include its habitat
restoration program for the Kirtland's Warbler - an endangered songbird,
the Au Sable National Scenic River, River Road Scenic Byway, Tuttle
Marsh Wildlife Area and Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center.
Oscoda, located at the mouth of the Au Sable River on the coast of Lake
Huron, has a population of approximately 8,000 and offers many
amenities. Most shopping can be done locally but a larger metropolitan
area (Bay City, Saginaw, and Midland) is located less than two hours
away for those seeking expanded opportunities. The Oscoda community is
home to churches of various denominations. Many civic and fraternal
organizations are also available. The Oscoda Area Schools provide
education in grades K-12 with Alpena Community College offering college
courses locally. Doctors and dentists are available locally with
hospitals located in Tawas (20 miles) and Alpena (45 miles). Outdoor
recreation opportunities are abundant with great fishing, hunting,
camping, hiking, and winter sports activities. Government housing may be
available for a short-term basis within walking distance of the ranger
