*Position Title: *Biological Scientist, GS-0401-7/9 *Location: *Eastern
Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center, Asheville, NC**
*Opening Dates: *February 13 through February 26, 2009
*Background*
The Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC)
provides the latest research and expertise concerning threats to forest
health to assist forest landowners, managers, and scientists throughout
the East. EFETAC is a joint effort of the Forest Service Research and
Development, the National Forest System, and State and Private Forestry.
The Center strives to maintain a holistic and integrated research
program to tackle complex issues, providing knowledge and tools to
partners and stakeholders in a timely, useful, and user-friendly manner.
*Position Information*
This position will join a multi-disciplinary research team and have
opportunity to collaborate with research scientists and support staff on
a variety of projects as well as gain leadership experience in the
natural resource program areas of science delivery and conservation
education. The incumbent will gather, compile, and analyze data and work
both individually and within the team setting.
This career intern position is an entry-level career development
position. The career intern will receive formal and on-the-job training
to become proficient in agency concepts, polices, guidelines, and
technical skills useful throughout the Forest Service, especially
Research and Development, relating to forest science-based applications
and science delivery efforts.
The position will be filled at the GS-7 level with promotion potential
to the GS-9.
Transfer of station is not authorized for this position.
*What is the Career Intern Program?*
The Career Intern Program is designed to attract college graduates and
experienced professionals interested in a career with the Federal
Government. Individuals are appointed to a two-year paid internship
program which provides training, development, and valuable full-time
on-the-job work experience. After successful completion of the program,
interns may be eligible for conversion to a permanent position without
further competition.
*Position Knowledge Requirements (responses required; limit each
response to 400 words) *The position requires: (1) knowledge of forest
health threats, forest-science, and natural resources-related topics and
issues; (2) ability to write and edit for natural resource-based
publications (/provide two writing samples with bylines/); (3) ability
to collaborate with federal and state agencies, non-governmental
organizations, and universities; and (4) ability to develop and maintain
a comprehensive forest-science based Web site and other science delivery
materials.**

*Qualification Requirements */To qualify for the biological scientist
position, each applicant must meet the following requirements for the GS-7:/
· Be a U.S. Citizen, AND
· Meet Position Knowledge Requirements, AND
· Have attained a Bachelor’s degree with courses in biological science,
natural resources, and/or environmental studies, /plus/—
1. One year of full-time graduate education in biological science,
natural resources or environmental studies; *OR *
2. One year of specialized experience in a related area comparable to
the GS-5 level of difficulty in the Federal Service; *OR *
3. Combination of appropriate specialized experience and graduate
education totaling one year; *OR *
4. Attainment of superior academic achievement in undergraduate studies,
based on demonstration of one of the following:
a. A 3.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale for all courses completed at
the time of application; or during the last 2 years of the undergraduate
curriculum; *OR *
b. A 3.5 grade-point average in the major field of study at the time of
application, or during the last 2 years of the undergraduate curriculum;
*OR *
c. A standing in the upper third of the college class or major
subdivision; *OR *d.* *Election to membership in one of the national
honorary societies (other than freshman or sophomore societies)
recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.
