THE POSITION(s):

The Forestry Technician position(s) that may be filled under these advertisements are all essentially field going, crew member positions. The position(s) filled may range from an entry level position (GS 3) with very little experience required and up to, at full performance level, the “lead marker” (GS 7) who will have day to day responsibilities of crew prioritization and direction, cruising quality control, using the National Cruise Processing Program, and creating work maps in GIS. All positions will be supervised by the Timber Management Assistant and assist in the management of the timber program on over 259,000 acres in the SC lowcountry. The district’s timber presale program includes the laying out, GPSing, and cruising timber sales on uneven terrain, through thick vegetation, and at all times of the year. We have a very active timber program that prepares, contracts, and administers the harvesting of an average of nearly 2500 acres per year.

ABOUT THE AREA:

The 259,000+-acre Francis Marion National Forest (FMNF) is located in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina and is bounded to the north by Santee River, the intra-coastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.  The National Forest is situated between two major metropolitan areas: Myrtle Beach (30 miles to the north) and historic Charleston (40 miles to the south).  This part of coastal South Carolina is a popular tourist destination well known for its fresh-water and salt-water recreational opportunities, golf and tennis, beautiful coastal scenery and historical landmarks dating from pre-historic times through Revolutionary and Civil War eras. The climate is hot and humid in the summer and is generally mild in the winter.

McClellanville is the duty station for all timber positions at this time. It is located on the coast 50 minutes north of Charleston and 25 minutes south of Georgetown. McClellanville is a small village nestled between the Francis Marion N.F. and the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

Huger is the probable site of the future office of the consolidated Francis Marion District- Forest Office. It is further from Georgetown, about the same distance from Mt Pleasant- Charleston, but is closer to Moncks Corner.

There is a demand for forest products for the production of biomass (renewable energy), pulp (paper) and dimension lumber from the trees of the Francis Marion. The FM has a very active prescribed burning program and a large population of the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpeckers.

Public primary and secondary educational opportunities are somewhat limited in McClellanville and other rural areas. There are good schools however, within commuting distance in Mt. Pleasant and Moncks Corner.

Post-secondary education is available at the following locations:

1) College of Charleston

2) Trident Technical College in North Charleston

3) Horry Georgetown Tech in Georgetown

4) The Citadel in Charleston.

5) Charleston Southern

Air transportation is available using the Charleston International Airport or the Myrtle Beach International Airport.  There is an Amtrak station in North Charleston.

South Carolina has both an income tax and a sales tax that is 6%.  There are no city or county income taxes.

Housing prices are highly variable at this time, depending mainly on location, but are generally higher in Charleston County than in either Berkeley or Georgetown counties, where many of the Francis Marion’s employees live.  Prices for lakefront or oceanfront property/housing are considerably higher than for off-water property. Rentals may be difficult to find in some areas, but may be available.
