Job Opening for Research Associate - Pika Monitoring Project

We are seeking a motivated individual to develop and implement a
comprehensive peer-reviewed long-term pika monitoring protocol
appropriate for four National park units: Crater Lake NP, Craters of
the Moon NM & Preserve, Lassen Volcanic NP, and Lava Beds NM. The
research associate will lead the field research and be the principal
author on the annual reports and monitoring protocols produced by this
project. Responsibilities include drafting and editing pika monitoring
protocols and SOPs, synthesis and analysis of survey information, and
assisting with database development. The protocol developed during the
first phase of this project will be pilot-tested at Lava Beds NM and
Crater Lake NP during the second summer of this project. This position
requires management and organizational skills. The individual must be
able to direct the activities of field technicians as well as organize
and supervise general project activities.

Job Duties will include: Develop a peer-reviewed pika monitoring
protocol for four National Park Service units. Compile existing data,
collect pilot data during the protocol testing phase, report on
results, and write peer-reviewed publications related to protocol
development and implementation. Prepare research talks, posters, and
presentations on the results of this study. Develop and implement
proper procedures for statistical analysis of status and trend data
information collected for the pika monitoring protocol. Design
park-specific sampling frames to be used for pika monitoring and the
proper procedures for data analysis. Ensure that all members of the
pika planning team are kept informed of project milestones and that
proper scientific monitoring techniques are used in the protocol
design and testing phase of this project. Maintain data accuracy and
quality control during the design and testing of the pika monitoring
protocol. Direct the activities of field technicians as well as
organize and supervise general project activities. Hire and supervise
summer field personnel. Order and maintain field equipment in good
condition. Schedule field work and logistics with the individual park
sites. Provide assistance to the database manager with necessary
information in the development of an Access database for storing pika
monitoring data. Attending professional development; performing other
duties as assigned.

The new hire will be an employee of the University of Idaho and will
be duty-stationed in the National Park Service Inventory and
Monitoring Program offices in Moscow, Idaho. The successful applicant
will be supervised by the principal investigator at the University of
Idaho and interact regularly with NPS I & M staff in Moscow, Idaho.
The current position is funded for one year, with the potential for
continuation for an additional year. Salary includes benefits.
Applicants should be college graduates with an MS in wildlife science,
ecology, or similar related field. Must possess excellent
interpersonal skills, demonstrated skills with computers, and
effective communication skills. Must be able to work independently and
assume the responsibilities of a project leader. Must be able to work
outdoors in adverse environmental conditions.

Additional desirable qualifications include: One or more years
post-graduate experience preparing technical reports. Experience in
occupancy estimation and modeling. Demonstrated ability to manage and
organize a multi-park project. Experience in using GIS for data
analysis and mapping.
