The Hiawatha National Forest, located in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, is looking to possibly hire up to 3 full-time forestry technicians. Two of these positions would be located in Raco, MI (near Sault Ste. Marie) and another in Rapid River, MI (near Escanaba). Main duties would include timber sale layout, GPS work, and timber cruising. There are many different avenues that the federal government may use in recruiting potential candidates. The most common methods are to (1) advertise the position to current government employees ONLY or (2) advertise the position to the entire public. Within the last decade, the USDA Forest Service has implemented another avenue to help recruit students into full-time positions - the Student Career Experience Program, otherwise known as SCEP. The SCEP program gives students the opportunity to get hand-on training in the field of their study and may allow for non-competitive entry into a full-time position with the government after they have earned their degree. The positions we are advertising here do not allow us to recruit students pursuing bachelor's or higher degrees. It is targeted for those pursuing Associate's degrees or similar certificates. Students must be in good standing. Attached is the application that students would need to complete in order to be considered for a SCEP position. In addition to this application, students would need to submit a resume and a copy a their transcripts. These items can be sent to address at the end of this email. (See attached file: SCEP-2008ER.doc) I realize this message doesn't do a great job at explaining the SCEP program. It is important to note that this is not intended to be a summer position. Work would be part-time or seasonal (between semesters) while the student is pursuing their degree and would eventually become a permanent, full-time position after completion of degree. Here is a website that might answer some common questions about the programs... http://www.fs.fed.us/fsjobs/step.html If there are any quesions, please don't hesitate to call or send an email. Thanks for your time and I hope to hear back from some of you and your students! Andrew Meyers U.S. Forest Service Hiawatha National Forest St. Ignace, MI 906-643-7900 ext. 115
