The *Supervisor’s Office of the Helena National Forest (HNF) * is 
conducting an outreach for a Soil Scientist, *GS-0470-09* position. Only 
one position will be filled at the GS-9 level, with a duty station at 
the Supervisor’s Office in Helena, MT. Government housing is _not_ 
available. *HNF anticipates advertising a permanent, full-time Soil 
Scientist position at the GS-9 level in the near future. *

*Position: *Responsibilities for this position are focused on 
soil-related contributions towards accomplishing the Forest’s priorities 
for program of work (POW). Both large and small projects on the Forest 
POW cover a wide diversity of management activities, including planning 
and implementation of timber sales, mechanical fuels treatments, 
prescribed burning, livestock grazing, abandoned mine land reclamation, 
travel management, recreation developments, and watershed restoration 
actions.

The incumbent for this Soil Scientist position will be assigned the 
following major duties:

v Field work à assures collection of quality field data to characterize 
existing soil conditions for project design and planning, and to be used 
in future trend monitoring for adaptive management.

v Environmental analyses à compiles, analyzes and interprets soils data, 
incorporating findings into technical reports for project planning and 
NEPA documentation.

v Teamwork à proactively participates as an interdisciplinary team 
member, providing recommendations on project design to sustain soil 
productivity as part of the project planning process.

v Watershed restoration projects à implements planned watershed 
restoration activities, such as meadow gully stabilization and road 
decommissioning, to meet assigned accomplishment targets.

The incumbent for this position will enjoy working closely with an 
outstanding team of natural resource professionals, within a strong 
support network among colleagues on the Helena NF.
