Re:       College Student Scholarships to attend the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education Fall 2009 Conference

The Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is seeking your help in nominating college students for our Scholarship Program which funds college students to attend our upcoming annual Fall Conference which will take place October 8-10 at the University of Michigan's Environmental Interpretive Center in Dearborn, Michigan.  Scholarship recipients will have up to 75% of their total conference registration and meals paid by the scholarship. Recipients will also receive a one-year membership with MAEOE. In order to apply, students must complete the attached application form which includes space for college faculty or staff to include a brief description of your reasons for nominating this student. All nominations must be postmarked by September 15, 2009.

The conference theme this year is Urban Environmental Education.  Multiple sessions on a wide variety of substantive environmental topics will be presented by K12 classroom teachers, informal environmental educators, and university faculty and natural resource professionals encompassing topics such as gardening, recreation, sustainability, water resources, reuniting children with nature, and more. Douglas Tallamy, author of "Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens," will be the keynote presenter. Professor Tallamy is currently the Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and has written more than 65 related research articles. "Bringing Nature Home has sparked a national conversation about the link between healthy ecosystems and human well-being".

This is an exciting opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students to participate in a professional development conference. Successful candidates will be asked to assist the Board for a short specified time with some tasks during the conference, such as registration or the educational raffle.

The mission of Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education is to promote environmental literacy through education. MAEOE is dedicated to fostering public understanding of environmental and outdoor education, by providing professional development for those working in these fields, and creating a statewide network of educators and natural resource professionals.

Whether you have been involved in MAEOE for many years or this is the first time you have heard of our organization, your help is needed to inform others in Michigan interested in environmental and outdoor education. The conference is also an excellent setting for networking with formal and non-formal educators and other professionals from around the state.
