The Helena National Forest will soon be filling a GS 462-8/9/10 Timber
Sale Administrator. This position is a permanent full time position
working for the Helena National Forest and Lewis and Clark National
Forest and having responsibility for administration of complicated
timber sales having complex requirements with diverse technical problems
and environmental features. This position will be located in Helena, MT.

*The Position:* The incumbent will serve primarily as a Timber Sale
Administrator for the Helena National Forest and provide assistance to
the Lewis and Clark National Forest as needed.
*Sale Administration Duties: *This position has overall responsibilities
for administration of timber sales having highly complex requirements
and conditions, coordinating timber sale administration with other
resources and insures sale compliance with pertinent NEPA documents,
performing timber sale appraisal analyses and assisting with timber sale
contract preparation and providing analysis or advice concerning logging
systems. This position may assist with timber marking or other sale prep
duties as needed.

*Forest: *The Helena National Forest is located in West-Central Montana
and contains 975,088 acres. It straddles the Continental Divide and
encompasses headwaters of both the Missouri and Columbia River systems.
Elevations range from about 3,500 feet to over 9,000 feet. Vegetative
cover varies from rolling grassland interspersed with timber patches at
the lower elevations, solid timber on the steeper middle and upper
slopes, to subalpine types or bare ridges in the high country. The
Supervisor’s Office is located in Helena, Montana, with district offices
in Helena, Lincoln and Townsend.
*Communities: **Helena* is the State's Capital and is located at the
junction of I-15 and Highway 12 & 287. For those water enthusiasts,
Helena is centrally located to many lakes and rivers. In addition to the
many lakes and rivers, Helena is also home to the Great Divide ski area
which offers many miles of downhill skiing. There are also many miles of
groomed trails for those looking to cross-country ski or snowmobile.
These activities are easily accessed and within a 30-minute drive from
the city.
Additionally, Helena offers 25 city parks, three golf courses, 17 public
tennis courts, and an array of other recreational choices. We are also
located roughly half-way between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.
Cultural offerings throughout the year include events sponsored and
co-sponsored by the Helena Symphony and Chorale, the Myrna Loy Center
for Performing Arts, Holter Museum of Art, Montana Historical Society,
the Lewis and Clark Public Library, the Archie Bray Foundation,
Grandstreet Theatre, and the Montana Jazz Festival!!
Area residents have three hospitals serving the area. They include: St.
Peter's Community Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital; and
Shodair Children's Hospital (children's psychiatric and genetic
services). This is in addition to the many private physicians and other
health care professionals. There are also several retirement homes and
community living centers serving the area.
The Helena area offers two high schools, three middle schools, and
several elementary schools. The school district also offers many
programs for students with special needs. Other educational offerings
include private schools, and the Helena College of Technology, which is
a component of the Montana University System and offers many programs in
the technical arena as well as courses for transfer to a four-year
college or university. Helena is also home to Carroll College, a
four-year liberal arts college, which offers a number of bachelor's
degrees and specializes in a widely-recognized pre-med program. Graduate
degree courses through the University of Montana and Montana State

*Climate: *Residents of the Helena enjoy all four seasons. The summer
temperatures range from the high 70's to low 90's with some warmer days.
The winters are fairly mild, by Montana standards, with temperatures
ranging in the high teens to thirties, with a few days below 0 each
year. The average growing season is 140 days.
*Housing: *The standard cost of living within the area is reasonable. If
you are looking to purchase, the average home price in Helena will run
between $150,000-$200,000 for a nice three bedroom home. A nice rental
unit can be found for between $700-1,100 per month. There is no
government housing available.
