PostDoc - Colorado State University

POST DOCTORAL SCIENTIST POSITION AVAILABLE

Job Description A postdoctoral position is available in the Environmental Biogeochemistry Laboratory at Colorado State University.

The position is initially for 1 year, and may be extended for 1 more year upon satisfactory progress. Work will focus on investigations related to the potential impacts of increased precipitation (or changes in soil redox potential) on the interrelationship between biogeochemical cycling of iron and organic matter. The three major objectives for this NSF funded project are: 1) determine the impact of increasing water content on the iron mineralogy and chemical structure of humic substances along subalpine moisture gradients, 2) Elucidate the role of chemical structure and concentration of humic substances on iron biomineralization along these moisture gradients and in detailed laboratory studies, and 3) Reveal the influence of aqueous geochemistry on the spatial distribution and macromolecular structure of humic substances at the mineral–water interface.

Interested applicants need to email a cover letter detailing research experience, current CV, and two letters of recommendation to: Dr. Thomas Borch, Professor of Environmental Biogeochemistry, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences and Department of Chemistry, Colorado State University, 1170 Campus Delivery, Fort Collins, CO 80523. Email: borch@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Job Requirements The successful candidate will have experience with several of the following techniques: synchrotron-radiation based techniques such as XAS or STXM, other spectroscopic techniques such as NMR and/or IR, and microscopic techniques, such as TEM and/or SEM. A Ph.D. in Soil Chemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Geochemistry or Chemical/Environmental Engineering or a related field is required. Good writing/scientific communications skill is a must. Experience with soil chemical methods and a good publication record is required.

Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Anticipated Start Date: Between October 2009 and January 2010
