Tenure-track freshwater fish/ecology

           VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

FULL-TIME, TENURE TRACK POSITION

STARTING AUGUST 2010

 JOB # 7455

Description:   Humboldt State University’s Department of Fisheries Biology invites applications for one full-time tenure-track position in Freshwater Fish Ecology/Salmonid Biology.

Rank and Salary:    Rank and salary are dependent upon the appointee's qualifications and experience. The current California State University Salary Structure is available at: http://www.humboldt.edu/~aps/docs/Salary-Schedule.xls.

Professional Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Fisheries Biology or related discipline from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment.  Applicants must have specialized expertise in freshwater fish ecology and demonstrated interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses to undergraduates.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience/knowledge in the conservation and ecology of salmonids, including Pacific Salmon (Onchorhynchus species).  Candidates whose qualifications also suit them to prepare individuals to function in a culturally and ethnically diverse society are especially encouraged to apply.

 Professional Duties

The primary professional responsibilities of HSU faculty members are: (1) teaching, (2) research, scholarship, and/or creative activity, and (3) service to the University, profession and community. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.  Possible instructional responsibilities may include: upper division lecture/lab course in Ecology of Freshwater Fishes, and lecture courses in Introduction to Fisheries Biology (upper division General Education) and Principles of Fishery Management.  In the future, the successful applicant may be expected to develop a lecture/lab course on Biology and Ecology of Pacific Salmon. Reappointment and tenure will depend primarily on demonstration of superior teaching skills, a steady record of success in securing grant and contract funding, and a history of active and successful involvement in our MS-level graduate program. This position will be 50% funded by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS); NMFS desires a research focus that emphasizes restoration effectiveness monitoring and investigations relating to anadromous fishes in the Klamath River. Expectations for research as compared to instruction will reflect the substantial NMFS commitment. Other faculty member duties include:  advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions.  Dedication to superior instruction of undergraduates and supervision of graduate students is a long standing tradition in the Natural Resources Programs at Humboldt State University and remain a primary criterion for tenure.
