History of the North American Forest Biology Workshop
The North American Forest Biology Workshop is a biennial conference conducted to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, discussion of current research findings and informal communication about the biology of forests and forest trees. Sponsored by the Tree Physiology and Forest Genetics & Tree Improvement working groups of the Society of American Foresters, this meeting has been held every other year in locations around Canada, Mexico and the US since its inception in 1970 at Michigan State University. The conference was originally conceived as a forum for scientists concerned principally with tree physiology and genetics. It has since evolved into a conference for exchange of technical information and ideas amongst scientists working in many areas of basic forest biology, ecology, silviculture, genetics and conservation throughout North America. It has proven a popular and outstanding venue for reporting innovative research for scientists and graduate students from universities, government, and industry. The meeting location rotates each biennium with various institutions in the United States, Canada, and Mexico hosting the conference.
