The purpose of
this webpage is to examine the relationship between literacy, women authors,
and development in West Africa. A country may have a high literacy rate, but this
doesn’t necessarily mean that the country is very well developed. A better
indication may be to see who can creatively express themselves through writing
and look at women who have had such an opportunity. In countries in West Africa many women are focused on survival rather than
creativity. If one’s basic needs of health, shelter and security are not first
met, the priority of literacy is not as high. The more of these basic needs
that are met, the greater the indication of development.
Women’s literacy increases
near the coast.
