Conclusions

The countries that enjoy a more livable climate, a peaceful political environment, and have a greater urban percentage have more female authors and greater percentages of literacy. These are all indications of development.

  1. In general, women’s literacy DECREASES as you move inland. This could be because the urban percentage is greater on the coast. The coastal countries have diverse landscapes that are not as harsh to live in as the Saharan countries inland.
  2. Senegal, Cote d’ Ivoire, and Nigeria seemed to have MORE women authors than all the other West African countries.  Nigeria is the most populated country in West Africa, but Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire have an average population.
  3. There were hardly any women authors found from Mauritania, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Niger, and The Gambia. Niger and Mauritania are located in the desert with a smaller urban percentage. Liberia and Sierra Leone have been war torn during the past few decades where other West African countries have been more peaceful.
  4. There is a large gap between men and women’s literacy in ALL West African countries.
  5. Internet use may be an indication of good communication and increase in women authors.  Senegal and The Gambia have high percentages compared to other countries.
