3/4 x 3/4 x 18 inch (19 x 19 x 457 mm) treated (and untreated) stakes are inserted half-way into the ground. At specified time intervals the stakes are removed and rated for severity of decay and insect damage. They are placed back into the ground after each rating until light bending pressure causes them to fail.

1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 18 inch (38 x 38 x 457 mm) treated depletion rate stakes are inserted half-way into the ground. At specified time intervals randomly selected stakes are removed and analyzed for preservative content.
